MAMMOGRAPHY CONTROVERSY
As many of you may have read, new research has created a new controversy about mammography.
A recent Canadian study researched one group of women who underwent yearly breast exam by
a physician, and another who also got yearly mammograms. The end result was that there were
virtually the same number of deaths due to breast cancer in each group. Experts have
cautioned not to presume that this proves that mammography has no value, but it should
cause us to pause and do still more research on the value of mammography. We all know
that mammography is very uncomfortable at best, or that is what I am told. Women who
are choosing not to undergo the exam may not be missing as much as we thought. It is
best to discuss your personal situation with your physician to see how this study relates
to you. For now, mammography recommendations will probably remain the same pending
further scrutiny of this study and additional studies.
