VASECTOMY and PROSTATE CANCER?
Several articles were published in the early 1990s that
suggested that vasectomy may be associated with an increased risk of prostate
cancer. There was a great deal of discussion, which ensued, in the medical
literature at that time suggesting that this conclusion made no sense. There was
some question about the design of the study as well. We have continued to
perform vasectomy routinely in this country, but not without some concern in the
back of our minds. Fortunately, a large seemingly well-designed study was
published in the June 19th issue of the Journal of the American Medical
Association that concludes that there is no association between vasectomy and
prostate cancer. It is likely that this conclusion will hold up, and I believe
that we should be quite confident of the likelihood that vasectomy does not lead
to cancer.
